Mastering Your Felted Pet Portrait Preview: A Guide to Perfecting Your Custom Art

When WoolFuriend sends a preview of your custom felted pet portrait, compare it with the photos and details you chose before production. Focus on a few visible features at a time: overall shape, expression or pose, and the markings that matter most to you.

A preview is your chance to check the piece and share focused feedback before approving it. Handmade wool has limits, so some differences in texture, color, or fine detail may not be fully adjustable.

Gather the same reference photos

Keep the main photo and supporting images you selected beside the preview. Identify which photo shows the pose or expression and which ones clarify markings. Comparing the preview with a different angle or coat appearance can make it harder to describe what you see.

If you are still choosing photos, start with [our guide to pet reference photos](https://woolfuriend.com/blogs/news/how-to-choose-the-best-photos-for-a-custom-pet-replica-the-complete-guide). It explains how to use an initial set of 3–5 clear images and add more if a detail needs clarification.

Review the preview in a clear order

1. Check the overall outline

For a full-body sculpture, compare the pose and silhouette: head angle, body proportions, legs, paws, and tail where visible. For a framed portrait, begin with the face and the amount of chest or body detail in the composition. Use a similar viewing angle when comparing images.

2. Look at the expression

Compare the eyes, ears, muzzle, and head tilt with the main photo you selected. Ask whether the preview reflects the expression you asked to preserve. Refer to that image when describing a concern.

3. Check distinctive markings

Look for the specific patch, blaze, paw color, or chest marking you called out. Point to one feature at a time and name the reference image that shows it most clearly. For left and right details, say whether you mean your pet’s left or the left side of the picture.

4. Consider color and texture in context

Room lighting and screen settings can change how colors appear. Wool also has a different surface from real fur, and shiny coats or certain textures cannot be reproduced exactly. If a color difference concerns you, compare the preview under neutral light and describe what looks different.

Write focused feedback

Use this structure: name the feature; point to the reference photo; describe what looks different; then ask whether a specific adjustment is possible.

For example: “The white marking above her left eye is the detail I want to check. Photo 2 shows it clearly. In the preview it appears wider; could you let me know whether narrowing it is possible?” This is a sample feedback format, not a customer story or a promise that a particular change can be made.

A short, specific note is easier to assess than “it doesn’t look right.” If you have several concerns, number them and put the most important first.

Separate a visual concern from a new request

Pointing out a detail that differs from the reference is different from changing the original direction, such as choosing a new main photo, switching the pose, or adding details that were not part of the agreed composition. Those changes may not be possible at the preview stage. Ask what can reasonably be adjusted before assuming a new request is included.

WoolFuriend welcomes feedback and will do its best to make reasonable adjustments, subject to handmade needle-felting techniques and materials. Read the [portrait expectations and material limitations](https://woolfuriend.com/pages/handcrafted-pet-portraits).

What happens after you approve?

WoolFuriend begins production with a 50% deposit. The remaining balance is paid after you approve the preview. Compare the preview with the details you agreed on, and ask about a specific difference if you are unsure whether it can be adjusted.

If you are deciding between formats, compare the [full-body sculpture and 3D framed portrait](https://woolfuriend.com/blogs/news/full-body-pet-sculpture-or-3d-framed-portrait).
